Windows in Art (Rashi School Online Lesson)

Windows have inspired many artists. Here are some amazing ways that artists have represented windows:

Salvador Dali, Figure at the Window, 1925

Henri Matisse, Open Window at Collioure, 1905

Rene Magritte, The Telescope, 1963

Marc Chagall, Hadassah Hospital Windows

Notre Dame Cathedral, France

Windows have been an inspiration for authors and illustrators, too! This great book, Outside my Window, by Linda Ashman, is a perfect companion to our lesson about windows.

What do you see out your window? Try drawing the window, then observe the details of the things you see outside and draw them, too.

Create-a-Pet (Rashi School Online Lesson)

Hello everyone! Here's a fun activity for you. With just a little bit of work, you'll have a chance to get playful and turn everyday things into cute pets. First, draw a circle, then a black dot somewhere in the circle, to create adorable googly eyes. Then, cut them out and get some tape. Here are some examples that I created in my house. I had such a fun time!

Draw me a Song (Rashi School Online Lesson)

Draw Me a Song is a project started in 2011 by designer Nour Tohme. At first, it was a small project, but then it gathered followers around the world. Tohme combines illustration and hand-drawn words to bring some of the world's most famous songs to life in a visual way.

Here are some Draw me a Song images:

Over the Rainbow by Judy Garland- Nour Tohme

Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin- Nour Tohme

Umbrella by Rihanna- Nour Tohme

Here are some images by students at the Hilliard School in Ohio, after learning about this project:

And here's what to do!

1. Choose a song with lyrics that you like.

2. Listen to the entire song with your eyes closed. When you're finished, write down a list, or draw, the first 3-4 images that come to mind.

3. Create an illustration that expresses the main ideas of the song, and/or your emotional reaction to the song.

Requirements:

1. You may use any 2-dimensional media you want- drawing, painting, or digital art.

2. Your work must take up the entirety of the page (or screen, if digital).

3. Your work must include at least one line of the song.

4. Your work must include the name of the artist who performs the song.

The Longest Line (Rashi School Online Lesson)

Hello students! This is a fun lesson that will help you create some eye-catching abstract art.

Materials:
Paper
Black pen or marker/Sharpie
Markers or colored pencils

Abstract art is a kind of art which features lines and shapes in the design, instead of something realistic. Here are some famous works of abstract art:

Piet Mondrian, Broadway Boogie Woogie, 1942

Robert Delaunay, Premier Disque, 1912

Thornton Dial, Out of the Darkness, the Lord Gave us Light, 2003

Start in the corner of the page. Draw a line that fills out the whole sheet and does NOT hit or cross itself. And- the line should meet back where it started. This is the tricky part, and it should take you five or ten minutes, at least.

Now, draw three or four geometric shapes over the lines. Finally, color in each shape with a color combination of your choice. Rashi students, remember to submit your work on Google Classroom!
