Sixth graders learned about artists from Senegal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Texas who use recycled materials to make art. We discussed the various reasons artists would choose recycled/repurposed materials, such as availability, environmental reasons, tradition, artistic challenge, and poverty. The students crushed an aluminum soda can with their feet, then used acrylic paint, Sharpie, and puffy paint to transform their can into a creature or character of their choosing.
I absolutely love this and will show this blog entry to my Kindergartners as a follow up to their use of recylcable materials during Design Day/Yom Ha'Atzmaut!
