Fifth Grade Reimagines Pharaoh Masks

Fifth graders have been learning about Ancient Egypt in Social Studies, and I thought it would be a great opportunity for a cross-disciplinary art project. I taught them about the traditions and rituals behind the famous death masks of Pharaohs such as King Tut. They learned a lot in their classroom about the Egyptian symbols on the masks, but I asked the to reinterpret the traditional mask by coming up with symbols, and symbolic animals, of their own. The results are expressive and fantastic!
