Presenting the Class of 2019

Every year, the graduating class creates a collaborative self-portrait project as a gift to the school. This year, we created reverse-painted acetate portraits. There were many layers to this project, both literally and metaphorically. First, they traced their photos onto acetate paper with Sharpie. We discussed contour lines and texture. Then, they learned how to choose and mix an analogous color scheme, and they painted the back of their portraits. Finally, we used gel thickener and acrylic paint to create paste paper, where they used tools to carve patterns and texture into another set of analogous colors. The results are striking! During the graduation ceremony, they will hold up their individual portraits when the group gift is presented.  Smaller duplicates of each portrait will be created so that they all fit in the frame as a collaborative gift.
